Pressure washing license requirements

Most states have no license specific to pressure washing, but four things can still apply: state business registration, contractor licensing above a dollar threshold or for construction-type work (California's is $1,000), city or county business licenses, and sales tax (Texas taxes pressure washing buildings). Wash-water runoff is regulated locally.

The four layers to check

  1. State business registration

LLC or DBA filing with the secretary of state (or county clerk for some DBAs).

  2. Contractor licensing

Some states license work above a job value or when it prepares surfaces for coatings. California: $1,000 threshold, and a C-61/D-38 Sand and Water Blasting classification.

  3. Local business license

Cities and counties issue general business licenses or tax receipts; check both where you are based and where you work.

  4. Sales tax

Some states tax cleaning services. Texas taxes pressure washing buildings, sidewalks and parking lots as building or grounds cleaning.

Wash water and storm drains

Municipal separate storm sewer (MS4) operators must hold EPA or state NPDES permits and run stormwater programs to minimize pollutant discharges, so many cities restrict what can enter storm drains - including wash water with detergents or chlorine. Ask your city’s stormwater or public works department what it requires (diverting to landscaping, vacuum recovery or discharge to sanitary sewer with permission).
